Flushing the Cooling System

I was lining up for some great smoked brisket in Fort Worth, Dallas on a cool evening in April when I was asked about the best liquid to flush the cooling system with. (and no, brisket and cooling systems are not related!!! lol)

Your car’s cooling system works by sending liquid through channels – the liquid picks up head from the engine, then pass through a hose to the radiator in the front of the car.

Coolant is what is ‘recommended’. But, distilled water does the same thing. Calcium in water results in a longer time for the heat to transfer. Using distilled water is likely to help extend engine life, especially if you have a water softener (chemicals and salt from the water softener system will eat at the copper in the head gaskets).
